SSI Payment Dates 2027: Every Month, With Early Payments

SSI payment dates for 2027

Supplemental Security Income is paid on the first day of the month. When the 1st falls on a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday, SSA pays on the last business day before it. That rule, and the 2027 calendar, produce the dates below, taken from the SSA 2027 payment calendar.

Three of the twelve payments move earlier in 2027, all because of a holiday or weekend. Nine arrive on the 1st. The payment date calculator shows these dates alongside any Social Security payment you also receive, and the full 2027 schedule lists every Social Security date for the year.

The rule behind the early payments

The SSA blog states the rule in one sentence: “When the first day of the month falls on the weekend or a Federal holiday, you receive your SSI payment on the last business day before the first day of the month.” The same rule for Social Security appears in the SSA FAQ: benefits due on “a Saturday, Sunday or legal public holiday” are “paid the business day before your due date.”

In 2027 the rule fires three times:

  • January 1 is New Year’s Day, on the OPM federal holiday list. The last business day before it is Thursday, December 31, 2026.
  • May 1 is a Saturday. The last business day before it is Friday, April 30.
  • August 1 is a Sunday. The last business day before it is Friday, July 30.

No other 2027 federal holiday lands on the 1st of a month, so the other nine payments are on schedule.

Months with two deposits and months with none

Because an early payment lands in the previous month, the calendar looks uneven even though you receive exactly twelve payments.

MonthSSI deposits receivedWhat they cover
December 2026December 1 and December 31December 2026 and January 2027
January 2027NonePaid December 31
April 2027April 1 and April 30April and May
May 2027NonePaid April 30
July 2027July 1 and July 30July and August
August 2027NonePaid July 30
December 2027December 1 and, expected, December 31December 2027 and January 2028

The December 2027 entry is based on the rule rather than on a published SSA calendar: January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, and January 1 is a holiday in any case, so the last business day before it is Friday, December 31, 2027. This article will be updated when SSA publishes its 2028 calendar.

The practical problem is the empty month that follows each double month. The April 30 deposit has to cover May, and the July 30 deposit has to cover August. If rent or a utility is drafted on the 1st, the money is already there; the risk is treating the second deposit as spare cash. A simple fix is to move the early payment into a separate account on the day it arrives and transfer it back on the 1st.

The 2027 SSI amount and when it starts

The federal SSI payment standard changes each January with the cost-of-living adjustment. For 2026 it is $994 a month for an individual and $1,491 for a couple, up from $967 and $1,450 in 2025, after the 2.8% COLA (SSA 2026 fact sheet). The 2027 COLA is announced in October 2026 at SSA’s COLA page and had not been released when this article was written.

The new rate applies to the January benefit, and the January benefit is the one paid on December 31. SSA’s 2026 fact sheet stated it directly for last year: “Increased SSI payments will begin with the December 31, 2025 payment.” So the December 31, 2026 payment is expected to be the first at the 2027 rate, and the December 1, 2026 payment is the last at the 2026 rate. Read how the 2026 COLA changed benefits for the other amounts that move with the COLA.

The federal amount is the most you receive from SSA before state supplements and before any reduction for other income. Your own payment is often lower because Social Security, wages or in-kind support count against it.

If you also receive Social Security

Many SSI recipients also receive a Social Security benefit. In that case the Social Security portion is paid on the 3rd of the month, and it follows the same weekend-and-holiday rule. From the 2027 calendar:

MonthSocial Security (3rd-of-month) payment date
January 2027Thursday, December 31, 2026 (January 3 is a Sunday)
February 2027Wednesday, February 3
March 2027Wednesday, March 3
April 2027Friday, April 2 (April 3 is a Saturday)
May 2027Monday, May 3
June 2027Thursday, June 3
July 2027Friday, July 2 (July 3 is a Saturday)
August 2027Tuesday, August 3
September 2027Friday, September 3
October 2027Friday, October 1 (October 3 is a Sunday)
November 2027Wednesday, November 3
December 2027Friday, December 3

Two payments a month, a few days apart, is normal for this group. Someone with both benefits gets four deposits in December 2026: SSI on December 1, Social Security on December 3, and both again on December 31.

State supplements

Some states add a supplement to the federal SSI payment. Where SSA administers the supplement, it is combined into one deposit on the federal date above. Where the state pays it separately, the state sets the date, and it is often later in the month. Check with your state agency if a supplement arrives on a different day from the federal payment.

What to do if an SSI payment is late

  1. Check the table. If it is May 1 or August 1 and nothing arrived, look at the previous business day. The payment came on April 30 or July 30.
  2. Wait three mailing days. The SSA calendar says: “If you don’t receive your payment on the expected date, please allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security.”
  3. Ask your bank or Direct Express. Deposits sometimes post late in the day.
  4. Log in to my Social Security. Payment history shows every deposit and any notice about a suspension or overpayment.
  5. Call 1-800-772-1213 or visit a local office after the three mailing days have passed.

Questions people ask about this

What day is SSI paid in 2027?

On the 1st of each month, except when the 1st is a weekend or federal holiday. In 2027 that moves three payments earlier: January (paid December 31, 2026), May (paid April 30) and August (paid July 30).

Which months in 2027 have two SSI payments?

April (April 1 and April 30) and July (July 1 and July 30). December 2026 also has two (December 1 and December 31), and December 2027 is expected to as well because January 1, 2028 is a Saturday.

Which months in 2027 have no SSI payment?

January, May and August. Each was paid at the end of the previous month. The total for the year is still twelve payments.

Is the early payment an extra payment?

No. It is the next month's payment arriving a day or two early. SSA does not pay an extra month.

When does the 2027 SSI amount start?

With the December 31, 2026 payment, which is the January 2027 benefit, based on how SSA applied the 2026 COLA. The 2026 federal rate is $994 a month for an individual and $1,491 for a couple; the 2027 rate is announced in October 2026.

I get SSI and Social Security. When is the Social Security part paid?

On the 3rd of the month, or the business day before when the 3rd is a weekend or holiday. In 2027 the 3rd-of-month payment moves in January (December 31, 2026), April (April 2), July (July 2) and October (October 1).

Does my state supplement come on the same day?

If your state's supplement is administered by SSA, it is combined with the federal payment and arrives the same day. States that pay their own supplement set their own dates.

What if my SSI payment is late?

Allow three additional mailing days after the scheduled date, check with your bank, then call SSA at 1-800-772-1213.

Benefit Calendar exists to answer one question plainly: when does the money arrive, and how much is it. Every date and dollar figure is checked against the original SSA, CMS, IRS or USDA document before it is published, re-checked by a second automated pass, and the source is linked next to it.
