January 2027 payment dates

January 2027 is the month people call SSA most often about a missing payment, and almost every call has the same answer: the payment came early, on December 31. Here is the full month from the SSA 2027 payment calendar.

Two payments moved into December

SSA’s rule, from its payment date FAQ, is that when a payment date “falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal public holiday, benefits will be paid the business day before your due date.” January 2027 starts with a holiday and a weekend back to back: Friday, January 1 is New Year’s Day, then Saturday, January 2 and Sunday, January 3.

SSI. The SSA blog explains: “When the first day of the month falls on the weekend or a Federal holiday, you receive your SSI payment on the last business day before the first day of the month.” The last business day before Friday, January 1 is Thursday, December 31, 2026. This happens every January, because January 1 is always a holiday.

3rd-of-month Social Security. January 3 is a Sunday. The business day before is not Friday, January 1, because that is the holiday, and not Saturday, so the payment goes back to Thursday, December 31, 2026. This shift happens only in years when January 3 falls on a weekend or the holiday, so it is not an every-year event.

New Year’s Day is on the OPM federal holiday list, as is Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 18. The MLK holiday does not touch any payment because no January payment falls on a Monday.

What the empty January means for your budget

If you are in a Wednesday group, January is an ordinary month: one deposit on January 13, 20 or 27. If you receive SSI, or Social Security on the 3rd, January has no deposit at all.

GroupDecember 2026 depositsJanuary 2027 depositsFebruary 2027 deposits
SSI onlyDecember 1 and December 31NoneMonday, February 1
3rd-of-month Social SecurityDecember 3 and December 31NoneWednesday, February 3
Both SSI and 3rd-of-month Social SecurityDecember 1, December 3, and two on December 31NoneFebruary 1 and February 3
Born 1st–10thDecember 9January 13February 10
Born 11th–20thDecember 16January 20February 17
Born 21st–31stDecember 23January 27February 24

The December 31 deposit has to last until February 1 or February 3, which is 32 to 34 days. If your rent is drafted on the 1st, the money is already in your account; the risk is spending it during the holidays. Some people ask their bank to move the December 31 deposit into a separate account until January.

The December 2026 schedule walks through the December side of this pattern.

The 2027 COLA arrives with the January payment

The cost-of-living adjustment for 2027 is announced in October 2026, after the September inflation numbers are released, at SSA’s COLA page. It had not been announced when this article was written, and the article will be updated with the percentage and the new SSI amounts when it is.

The timing does not depend on the number. SSA’s 2026 fact sheet described last year’s pattern: “The increase will begin with benefits that Social Security beneficiaries receive in January 2026. Increased SSI payments will begin with the December 31, 2025 payment.” The 2026 COLA was 2.8%, which took the SSI federal payment standard from $967 to $994 a month for an individual and from $1,450 to $1,491 for a couple.

Applied to this year:

  • Wednesday groups get the 2027 rate on January 13, 20 or 27, 2027.
  • SSI recipients and the 3rd-of-month group get the 2027 rate in the December 31, 2026 payment, because that is the January benefit.
  • The December 1 through December 23 payments are the last at the 2026 rate.

SSA mails a COLA notice in December that shows the new gross benefit, the new Medicare deduction and the net deposit. It also appears in the Message Center of a my Social Security account, usually a few weeks before the paper copy arrives. Read how the 2026 COLA changed benefits for everything else a COLA changes, including the earnings limit and the taxable maximum.

The 2027 Medicare Part B premium also starts in January

If your Part B premium is deducted from your benefit, the January payment is the first with the 2027 premium. The 2026 standard premium is $202.90 a month (CMS fact sheet). CMS usually announces the next year’s premium between late October and mid-November, and this site will publish it the day it is released.

Because the COLA raises the gross benefit and the Part B increase lowers the net, the change in your actual deposit is the difference between the two. For people with small benefits, the hold-harmless rule prevents the Part B increase from reducing the net Social Security payment below the prior year’s amount. See the 2026 Part B premium and IRMAA article for the premium tiers.

Which month the January payment covers

Social Security pays one month behind. The January 13, 20 or 27 payment is the benefit for December 2026, and the December 31 payment for the 3rd-of-month group is also the December 2026 benefit, paid on the January date. That is why a COLA “for 2027” applies to the December benefit: SSA defines the COLA as effective for December benefits, which are payable in January.

SSI is paid for the current month, so the December 31, 2026 payment is the SSI benefit for January 2027.

If a beneficiary dies in December 2026, the Social Security payment received in January (or on December 31 for the 3rd-of-month group) is for the month of death and must be returned. SSI for the month of death is generally kept.

What to do if your January payment is late

  1. Check whether it already arrived on December 31. For SSI and the 3rd-of-month group, that is the January payment.
  2. Wait three mailing days. The SSA calendar says: “If you don’t receive your payment on the expected date, please allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security.”
  3. Ask your bank. Some banks post federal deposits before dawn; others post them in the afternoon.
  4. Log in to my Social Security. Your payment history shows the date and amount of every deposit, and your COLA notice is in the Message Center.
  5. Call 1-800-772-1213 or visit a local office after the three mailing days have passed. Offices are closed Friday, January 1 and Monday, January 18.
